Sabayon

Sabayon Linux (Fabio Erculiani)

Apart from being an italian dessert, it is also a linux distro based on Gentoo. I heard there was a new version released, so I decided to give it a try.

Right now I've got a 3GB file waiting on my laptop, which I first need to burn to a DVD. Quite big... Ubuntu is just one CD, which has the most used applications preinstalled. Anyway, SabayonLinux also uses a LiveCD like Ubuntu, so that makes it a bit easier to start with.

I've never used Gentoo, and I'm not that fond of KDE, so I'm not sure what to expect.

Not that I want to leave Ubuntu (which is installed on both my laptop and desktop), I'm just looking for something to play with

You'll find my opinions on this page after trying out the Live CD...

Ben
I just noticed that the Sabayon logo gives this website so much colour .
But I like it this way... I don't want a whole palette of colours on my site.

ok great... Forgot to check the md5sum, and now I burned a completely useless DVD.
In the meantime, 3.26 got released too (just one week after the previous release!), so I'm downloading this one right now.

Woohoo, I finally managed to burn the DVD.
The LiveCD works really great... with a quite fast startup time.

At startup, you get to select Desktop acceleration (Beryl) using XGL or Aiglx. It automatically detected my 3D card and the possible options with it: my ATI Radeon 9700 Mobility does not support the cominbation Aiglx & Beryl.
Everything went smooth: really great eyecandy, commonly used applications are installed by default, network cards detected, ...
The only thing I don't like is KDE, as I find the application menus so confusing...

I tried Sabayon on my desktop... Oddly enough, it doesn't work well when installing the program.
Xgl was constantly using 85% of the processor, so everything was really slow. I don't understand it, as it worked really great when using the LiveCD.
